Robert Knighton

My obsession with pottery began when I was bewitched by the magic of the spinning clay rising from the pottery wheel. I was also easily drawn in to the alchemic transition from the mundane to the beautiful that can happen in the pottery kiln.

Most of my pottery is functional ware to which many layers of different glazes are applied. The decorative effect relies on the interaction between the various glazes. I have a palette of a dozen or so glazes, and I have learned over the years that certain combinations of glazes can lead to attractive results. I am never sure exactly what will happen. Sometimes I seem blessed by the kiln. Opening the kiln is always a time of nervous excitement.

Occasionally there have been adventures into the areas of Raku, Earthenware, Sculpture, Water features, Goddesses and Pit firing, but at present the focus is on white stoneware and porcelain.
